Sydney is in the TFO program because she shows so much interest in technology and coding and electronics. We didn't have this program, we didn't know about this program. When it was introduced into McGarrah, we knew it would be a good fit for her. I have seen a lot of changes in her knowledge about troubleshooting technology and talking about the steps they take to build things. Her interest has heightened with regards to technology. She shares all the time about the projects they do, from the car races to the drones. I'm looking forward to her returning year after year.
Elementary STEAM/e Program
Our elementary program introduces members to entry-level STEAM/e activities. This approach allows students to explore STEAM/e concepts in fun and exciting ways. We encourage members to make observations and predictions about the possible results before starting an activity. This method fosters critical thinking, as students draw conclusions based on the results of previous activities. Our goal is for members to apply the knowledge gained to support their hypotheses, which positively impacts their performance in basic elementary school courses.
Team-Based Activities and Collaboration
Our team-based, driven activities promote collaboration and teamwork. The expected outcome is creating happier and better-connected team members. As members complete the STEAM activities, we focus on improving their listening and communication skills. Additionally, our activities develop and enhance mindfulness, patience, and respect for themselves, their teammates, and the coaching staff. After returning to the classroom post-COVID pandemic, we encourage our members to apply the foundational principles learned in our program in both their classroom environment and at home. We emphasize responsibility and accountability for their actions and success.
Afterschool Enrichment Program
Our afterschool enrichment activities spark curiosity in math, science, and reading skills. These activities are designed to get students excited about learning, particularly in these subjects. Members are introduced to general STEAM concepts through visual exploration and hands-on experiences. We challenge members to think differently about various approaches to challenges, fostering creative problem-solving.
Whole Child and Family Support
TFO supports both the child and their family through intentional community partnerships. We provide comprehensive support plans that address various life demands. By investing in relationships with parents, who are key to their child’s success, we maintain constant communication about their child’s academic and social-emotional needs. Our community partners also provide wrap-around services to support the academic, emotional, and physical wellness goals of our members and their families.
Accelerated Learning Through Small Groups
TFO members benefit from accelerated, hands-on learning in a supportive small-group environment. This approach helps reduce learning loss and builds confidence. Through partnerships with schools, our engaging STEM activities reinforce and enhance math and science lessons from the school day. Rather than reteaching, TFO provides supplemental learning by offering projects that align with the members’ current reading, math, and science skill levels.
