Erica, grade 8
"I've been in this program for about three years. I really enjoy it because there are a lot of activities and things we do that you cannot get in [regular] school. They bring in speakers that come from different jobs like architects and veterinarians. I really enjoy it because it gives us an opportunity to ask questions. I've also made a lot of friends. I've met people from different grades that I normally would have never met, but now I'm best friends with them. I love participating and competing in events we have, like KAHOOTS, and the cooking baking event. That was a lot of fun, and we got to experience what it would be like as a cafeteria manager to multiply the doses of food."
What Students Can Expect:

Our Program Site Coordinator works closely with partner school academic coaches or department leaders to ensure alignment between our program and the school district pacing guide. TFO staff creates a supportive environment where learning from the school day is reinforced, encouraged, and expanded upon, ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.
Our middle school program is designed around five key components: school day linkage learning, self-discovery activities, career research, monthly guest speakers, and field trips. These components aim to foster the four C’s of 21st Century Learning Skills: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration. We introduce students to advanced STEAM/e concepts using hands-on projects, allowing them to dive deeper into the practical applications of these topics. Something as simple as a baking project teaches students math and chemistry.
We integrate interdisciplinary learning, encouraging members to think broadly and critically about real-world problems. The knowledge they gain has a direct impact not only on their middle school science and math courses but also on future secondary school coursework. Members actively explore, analyze, evaluate, and create innovative solutions, promoting collaboration and teamwork within the STEAM/e program.
Our classroom activities equip students with essential soft skills and help them build self-esteem. TFO coaching staff lead sessions on stress management, classroom behavior strategies, and the importance of a positive self-image. Coaches also provide daily homework assistance, ensuring that members are fully supported in their academic journey.
A favorite activity among members is the TFO Career Connection Bowl, where students present what they have learned in the form of a skit. They can use what they saw on a field trip, information from a guest speaker, and lessons from afterschool programming. We invite professionals from various STEAM/e fields to watch and judge these competitions, giving students invaluable feedback and insight.
